How to Clean a Fabric Sofa: A Stain-by-Stain Guide

Short answer: cleaning a fabric sofa comes down to three steps — dry vacuuming first, then a low-foam solution suited to the type of stain, and finally lifting it by pressing (not rubbing) and drying quickly. Never soak the sofa: water that gets into the fabric stays in the foam and causes stain rings, smells and mould. Before applying any product, always test it somewhere hidden (the back skirt or under a cushion).

How do you clean a fabric sofa? Step by step

• 1. Take the cushions off. Remove the seat and back cushions and see the crumbs and dust inside the sofa.
• 2. Vacuum dry. Vacuum the whole surface with the upholstery head on low suction. Go along the seams with the narrow nozzle. Skip this step and the dust gets wet, turns to mud and spreads the stain.
• 3. Prepare the solution. One teaspoon of liquid detergent or upholstery shampoo in a litre of warm water. Mix it and use only the foam.
• 4. Apply to the cloth, not the fabric. Dip a microfibre cloth in the foam and wring it out; the cloth should be damp, not wet.
• 5. Press from the outside in. Wipe by pressing from the outer edge of the stain towards its centre. Rubbing in circles pushes the stain into the fibre and causes pilling.
• 6. Rinse. Take off the detergent residue with a second damp cloth dipped in clean water. Detergent left behind attracts dust as it dries, and the same spot gets dirty again within weeks.
• 7. Dry it quickly. Press with a dry towel to draw out the moisture, open a window or use a fan. If you use a hairdryer, use the cold setting, not hot.

Cleaning differences by fabric type

• Boucle: because the surface is looped, it must not be brushed; a stiff brush pulls the loop and leaves a permanent mark. Use the vacuum head on low suction and lift stains by pressing.
• Chenille: it has a pile direction. Always wipe in the direction of the pile, or a shadow that looks like a colour difference remains once dry.
• Linen-look weaves: they absorb water quickly. Work with very little moisture and speed up the drying.
• Stain-resistant (nano) coated fabric: liquid beads on the surface. The earlier you act, the less trace is left; do not use bleach or acetone, as they destroy the coating.
• Leather-look covering: wipe with a damp cloth; do not apply woven-fabric methods.

Six mistakes made when cleaning a sofa

• Using bleach. It permanently lightens the colour of coloured upholstery fabric.
• Spraying a product directly onto the sofa. The foam gets wet and leaves a larger ring stain as it dries.
• Rubbing. It raises the fibres, and that area looks fluffy and dull compared with the rest.
• Using a steam cleaner blindly. On some synthetic fabrics heat causes shine and shrinkage; do not use it unless the fabric label says it is suitable.
• Leaving it wet without ventilating. Moisture in the foam produces mould and smell.
• Always using the cushions the same way up. The settling gathers in one spot; turn the cushions every 2-3 months.

The weekly and seasonal routine that extends a sofa's life

• Weekly: vacuum on low suction, plump the cushions.
• Monthly: change the position and face of the cushions, clean the seams with the narrow nozzle.
• Every 3 months: pull the sofa a few centimetres off the wall and vacuum the back and underneath.
• Yearly: professional upholstery cleaning, if the fabric allows it.
• Always: use a net curtain where the sofa is in direct sun — sunlight is the number one cause of fading.

Which sofa is easier to clean?

• Cushions with removable covers: a zipped cushion cover solves a stain without having to work on the whole sofa.
