Mirror

A mirror is the most effective decorative piece for finishing a wall: it multiplies the light in a room, makes the space look deeper than it is and gives an empty wall character on its own. The models in the Selishome mirror collection are large wall mirrors designed to hang above a console; each one is made in the same line as the console of a dining room series, and is also sold separately from it.

Shapes and sizes
The collection includes round, asymmetric oval, soft-cornered square and wavy organic shapes. The models whose dimensions are listed on the product page are between 100 and 112 cm (Massimo 100 x 100, Mocha 104 x 104, Braga 110 x 110, Nobel 112 cm). The frames use cream, mink-beige and black lacquer, slim metal and gold strip details; on some models the glass has a bronze or golden tint that softens the reflection.

Mirror size relative to the console
A practical rule: the mirror should be roughly half to two-thirds the width of the console below it. The consoles in our catalogue with listed dimensions are 208-228 cm wide, which is why 100-112 cm mirrors sit in balance at the centre of the console. A mirror wider than the console makes the wall feel heavy; one that is too small looks lost.

How high to hang a mirror
Above a console, the bottom edge of the mirror should be 15-25 cm above the top; if you plan to place a lamp or vase there, leave a little more. On a wall without a console, the centre of the mirror should be about 145-155 cm from the floor, which is average eye level.

Where to place it
Mirrors are most often used on the console wall behind the dining table, in the entrance hall and in the living room. A mirror hung opposite or beside a window carries daylight into the room. Also look at what the mirror will face: a well-laid table or a window makes the room feel larger, a door or a cluttered corner does not.

Hanging and care
Large wall mirrors are heavy; hang them from at least two points, not a single nail, using plugs suited to the wall. On plasterboard, use plasterboard fixings or leave the installation to a professional. When cleaning, do not wet the glass directly: spray the glass cleaner onto a microfibre cloth, because liquid seeping in at the edges eventually stains the silver backing. Lacquered frames are wiped with a damp cloth; avoid abrasive products.
