How to Tell a Good Sofa: 10 Checks on Frame, Foam and Fabric
Short answer: the quality of a sofa set lives in four layers: the frame timber, the support system (springs or webbing), the foam density and the upholstery workmanship. None of them shows in a photograph. If you have five minutes in a showroom, follow this order: take the sofa by the arm and rock it, sit down and stand straight up watching how the foam recovers, check the seams and pattern alignment, and finally look underneath at the support system. Those four moves tell you most of what you need to know.
Frame timber: the layer that decides the sofa's life
Everything you see on a sofa — fabric, foam, stitching — can be renewed years later. The one thing that cannot be renewed is the frame; it decides whether a seating group lasts ten years or three. The timbers used in upholstered furniture and how they behave:

In a good frame the load-bearing structure is hardwood and the wide surfaces are plywood. As important as the species is that the timber is kiln dried. Damp timber gives off moisture over time, shrinks and opens gaps at the joints. That is the story behind most creaking sofas.
Joinery: mortise, dowel and corner block
Even with good timber, a sofa works loose if the parts are badly joined. There are three methods:
- Mortise and tenon: a projection on one part enters a recess in the other and is fixed with glue. The strongest and most labour-intensive method.
- Dowel and glue: a joint aligned with cylindrical wooden pins. Strong when done properly, but not as durable on its own as a mortise.
- Staples and screws: quick and cheap. On frames where this is used alone, movement starts within a few years.
The real clue is the corner blocks: triangular timber pieces fixed at 45 degrees into the four corners of the frame, preventing twist and stopping the sofa going out of square. If you can lift the lining underneath, look at the corners.
What foam density should you look for, and how do you test recovery?

Foam decides both the comfort and how many years that comfort lasts. Its measure is density in kg/m³ — how many kilos a cubic metre of foam weighs. As stated on the Selishome frequently asked questions page, the 28-35 kg/m³ range is ideal for home use; foam below that collapses quickly and leaves a permanent dip in the seat.
Density does not mean firmness; a high-density foam can also be soft. What you are looking for is a structure that feels soft when you press it but takes its shape back when you let go.
A simple test: press the middle of the cushion with your palm, wait three seconds, take your hand away. If the surface returns to its original shape within two seconds, the foam is good. If a handprint stays, the density is low and that dip becomes permanent in later years.
Good seat cushions usually use a layered structure: a supporting high-density foam beneath, a soft comfort layer above, and fibre filling on top. A single piece of foam at one firmness is a cheaper solution.
The spring system: the sofa's invisible backbone
What is under the foam decides the support you feel when you sit:
- Serpentine (S) springs: wavy steel springs stretched across the frame. The most common system; springs set close together is a good sign.
- Bonnell springs: conical springs tied individually. They give a deeper, softer seat and take more labour.
- Elastic webbing: stretched rubber strips. Light and modern; they can lose their spring over time and should be closely spaced.
How to test: put your weight on the middle and then on the edge of the seat separately. In a good system you feel support beneath you at the edge too; if it drops suddenly at the edge, the springs have only been put in the middle.
A five-minute quality check in the showroom

- Rock it. Take it by the arm and move it gently back and forth; creaking or play means weak joints.
- Lift it. Raise one end slightly. A very light sofa is a sign that soft timber or thin sections were used in the frame.
- Press and release. Count how long the foam takes to come back.
- Look at the seams. Is the stitch line straight, are the thread ends cleaned up, and on a patterned fabric does the pattern align between back and armrest?
- Open the zip and look underneath. Foam wrapped in a covering cloth is good workmanship; the lining should be evenly stretched and the legs fixed with a screwed flange.
