How Many m² Should a Bedroom Be? Average 12-14, Minimum 10.5 m²
Short answer: in Turkish homes the average bedroom is 12-14 m². For a standard bedroom set (bed with storage base, two bedside tables, chest of drawers, wardrobe) to sit comfortably, the lower limit is about 10.5 m², while the comfortable size is 13 m² and over. For a main bedroom the target is 14-18 m². Rooms under 9 m² count as "small bedrooms" and some pieces of the set have to go.

There is no single answer to "a 10 m² room is how many metres by how many?"; the same area comes from different width-and-length combinations, and the shape matters more than the area. The table below gives the combinations most often found in homes.

A critical warning: a 10 m² room of 2.50 × 4.00 and one of 3.00 × 3.35 have the same area but behave completely differently. In the first, a 160 bed + two bedside tables (294 cm in total) will not fit on the 2.50 m wall; in the second it sits exactly on the 3.00 m wall. Measure your narrow wall first, then look at the floor area.
How do you calculate a room's area?
Width (metres) × length (metres) = area. For a room of 320 cm × 440 cm: 3.20 × 4.40 = 14.08 m². If your room is not a neat rectangle (a column recess, an alcove, an L shape), divide it into rectangles, calculate each area separately and add them up. Do not forget to subtract the recess; the real area is where the furniture will go.
What is the minimum bedroom size? Where the figure comes from
Rather than saying "it should be this much", let us do the calculation together. It runs off two walls:
- The bed wall: a 160 cm bed + a bedside table of about 67 cm on each side = 294 cm. So the wall the bed goes against must be at least 3 metres.
- The depth: 200 cm of bed length + 62 cm of wardrobe depth + 90 cm in front of the wardrobe to open the doors and pass = 352 cm.
3.00 × 3.52 = 10.5 m². That is the smallest size in which a set fits without dropping a single piece. If you also want to place the chest of drawers and pouffe comfortably and walk freely on both sides of the bed, the 12-14 m² band is the real comfort range.
The minimum bedroom area generally accepted in housing schemes is 9 m²; a room that size is for single use or a child's room and is not enough for a double set.

How many m² should a main bedroom be?
For a main bedroom the target is 14-18 m². Three things make the difference:
- Both sides of the bed must be open. With one side against a wall, whoever sleeps on the inside climbs over the other every time. 60 cm on each side means adding 160 + 120 = 280 cm to the bed wall.
- The wardrobe has 6 doors, not 4. Two people's clothes barely fit into a 200 cm wardrobe; a wall of 260-300 cm is needed.
- The chest of drawers and dressing table actually get used. You need to set aside another 165 cm of uninterrupted wall opposite.
At 18 m² and over, extras such as a dressing area, an armchair or a reading corner become possible. In rooms over 20 m², setting the wardrobes as an island and dividing the room in two is the most efficient solution.

Circulation space: more important than floor area
A room can be 14 m² and still feel cramped if the bed goes on the wrong wall. Plan the empty space, not the dimensions:
- At least 60 cm along the long side of the bed: the minimum for getting in and out and changing the sheets.
- At least 70 cm at the foot of the bed: the route through the room passes here.
- 90 cm in front of the wardrobe: the door opens 50-60 cm and the remaining 30-40 cm is where you stand.
- The area the door leaf sweeps: a door opening into the room describes an 80-90 cm arc; do not put a bedside table there.
- The radiator and the area in front of the window: must not be blocked; rule these walls out from the start when planning the wardrobe.

How many m² should a child's or teenager's room be?
For a child's room the target is 9-12 m². The difference from a bedroom is that the room does three jobs at once: sleeping, studying and playing. The layout priorities:
- A 90×190 or 120×200 bed, preferably with one long side against the wall — that single decision gains 60 cm.
- The desk at right angles to the window or in front of it; natural light should come from the left (from the right for a left-hander).
- A wardrobe 100-150 cm wide; a 200 cm wardrobe leaves no room for the desk.
- Leave at least 100 × 100 cm of clear space in the middle; that is the play and dressing area.

Which set fits a small bedroom?
In a room of 9-11 m² there are three decisions that save the day:
- Choose a bed with a storage base. Storage under the mattress removes the need for a separate chest elsewhere. In sets, a storage bed is standard anyway.
- Drop the chest of drawers and enlarge the wardrobe. In a small room, one tall wardrobe always saves more space than two separate storage bodies.
- Use sliding doors. You get back the 50-60 cm of opening allowance a hinged door needs.

How to measure your room in five minutes
- Measure every wall above the skirting board; lower down there is a 1-2 cm difference, and that difference causes trouble at installation.
- Write the walls down separately; do not round to "the room is 3×4". In older buildings opposite walls are rarely equal.
- Note the distance from the door and window edges to the corner of the wall; this decides how far the wardrobe can come.
