How Many Pieces Are in a Dining Room Set? What Does It Include?
Short answer: the core of a dining room set is a table + 6 chairs + a console. Counted chair by chair that set looks like 8 pieces; with the chairs written as one line it looks like 3 pieces; and if the mirror is a separate line the number goes to 9. So "how many pieces" tells you not the size of the set but how the seller wrote the list. A display cabinet, TV unit and coffee table are not fixed parts on most models.
What is in a dining room set?

Why is the "piece count" misleading?
Of two sets with identical contents, one says "3 pieces" and the other "10 pieces". The contents are the same; the counting method differs. The confusion comes from four places:
- Are the chairs counted one by one? This is the biggest difference. "Table + chair set + console" is three items; write the chairs on separate lines and it becomes eight. Find the number of chairs first.
- Is the mirror included with the console? On some models the console and mirror are one item, on others the mirror hangs separately. The number changes; the furniture entering your room does not.
- Is the display cabinet a separate body or a compartment of the console? In current models the trend is to put a glazed section in the middle of the console rather than a separate glazed cabinet. The Virjin dining room set is an example: there is a reflective-glass compartment in the middle of the console, not a separate body. The set counts as "with display cabinet" but no item is added to the piece count.
- Is a TV unit on the list? A "10 pieces" with a unit and an "8 pieces" without one are not comparable.
A practical rule: read the list of bodies, not the piece count. What matters is not how many lines were written but which pieces of furniture will enter your dining area.

In practice sets are named by their number of chairs. Two things decide the choice: how many people live in the home, and how often you entertain.

Where do the console, display cabinet and buffet fit in?
The most debated item in a set is not the table but the storage body opposite it. This body's job is to take the load off your kitchen cupboards; at a crowded table its top becomes a second serving surface.
Which piece can you leave out?
In a small dining area, rather than forcing the whole set in, it works better to take off the list the piece whose function is met another way:
- Display cabinet: if you have no service to show, a glazed section gathers dust; a closed console holds more in the same place.
- Console: if there is no uninterrupted wall opposite the table, drop it; put a slim or wall-hung body there instead.
- Two chairs: taking a six-chair set with four eases circulation; the other two can be bought later.
- Mirror: if you are going to hang a picture arrangement on the wall, you can ask for the console without its mirror.

Three things change: the set is chosen smaller, the console usually drops off the list, and the form of the table is set by the walkways. - The table's footprint — not the table itself, but the circle when the chairs are pulled out.
- The uninterrupted length of the console wall — what is left after sockets, radiators and the door frame.
- Console to table — the chairs on that side must be able to push back.
- The walkway — keep the route between kitchen and table clear.
- The way into the home — a one-piece top may not fit in the lift.
