Three-Quarter Bed Sizes: The 120x200 cm Guide
Short answer: a three-quarter bed — the size Turkey calls "one and a half person" — is 120×200 cm. Some makers produce it 190 cm long, so you will also see 120×190 cm; the width is 120 cm either way. The base is made exactly the same size as the mattress (120×200); the external size of the bed frame, however, is larger than these figures because of the body and headboard thickness.
Three-quarter (120) bed size table
"One and a half person", "1.5 person" and "the 120" all describe the same bed:
| Size (width × length) | Name | Width per person |
|---|---|---|
| 90×190 cm | Single | 90 cm |
| 100×200 cm | Wide single | 100 cm |
| 120×200 cm | Three-quarter (standard) | 120 cm (one person) |
| 120×190 cm | Three-quarter (short length) | 120 cm (one person) |
| 150×200 cm | Double | 75 cm |
| 160×200 cm | Wide double | 80 cm |

The most important line is the difference between 120×200 and 150×200: on a 120 bed one person has all 120 cm, while on a 150 two people squeeze into 75 cm each. For everything from a cot mattress to king size, see our full bed size table.
Who is a three-quarter bed for — can two people sleep on it?
The Turkish name is misleading: this is not a size two people can sleep on, it is the size on which one person sleeps spread out. Split 120 cm in two and you get 60 cm each — the width of a coach seat. For two adults the practical lower limit is 150×200.
120×200 is the right choice in these situations:
- In a teenager's room: for those who find a 90 too narrow, it is the best step up that does not steal space from the desk.
- In narrow bedrooms: if a 150 eats into the walkway, a 120 lets the room breathe.
- In a guest room and for people who turn a lot in their sleep.
Three-quarter base and bed frame sizes

A three-quarter base is also 120×200 cm — a base goes under the mattress at exactly the same width and length. The difference is in height:
- Storage base body height: 33-40 cm is common.
- Mattress thickness: 22-32 cm is normal for sprung and memory foam mattresses.
- Total height: getting out of bed is easiest when base + mattress comes to 55-65 cm.
With a bed frame the figures no longer match: the side panels add width on both sides, and the headboard and footboard add length. The wall space you need to set aside for a 120×200 mattress is not 120 cm but more, depending on the model — read the external dimensions on the product page. We compared the options in our storage base or standard bed frame article.
Which rooms does a 120×200 bed fit?
You should keep 60 cm of walking space along at least one long side of the frame, and 90 cm clear in front of the wardrobe for the doors.
| Room area | Verdict for 120×200 |
|---|---|
| 7-9 m² | Works; 120 is the upper limit in these rooms |
| 9-11 m² | Comfortable; a desk and a wardrobe also fit |
| 12 m² and over | Fits easily; a 150 could also be considered |

Measure each wall individually rather than rounding the room off as "3 by 4". For the room as a whole, our teenager's room sizes and how to choose article covers bed, desk and wardrobe together.
Duvet cover and sheet sizes for a 120 bed
The one weak point of 120×200 is bedding; there is less ready-made choice than for 150 and 160.
- Fitted sheet: the label reads something like 120×200+30; the last figure is the mattress thickness. If your mattress is 32 cm, a +25 sheet will slip off the corners.
- Duvet cover: the width you need is roughly the mattress width plus the overhang on both sides. Read the cm figure on the label rather than the words "single bed".
If one person will sleep in it, 120×200 is a well-balanced size; for two people, look straight at 150×200 or 160×200. In Selishome sets, the standard bed frame takes a 160×200 cm mattress; you can compare external dimensions in the bed frame category and in the bedroom sets section.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many cm is a three-quarter bed?
120×200 cm. Some makers also produce it as 120×190 cm. The width is always 120 cm; only the length changes.
Can two people sleep on a 120 bed?
Not comfortably. A 120 cm width gives 60 cm per person. For two adults the lower limit is 150×200 and the comfortable size is 160×200 cm.
How many cm is a three-quarter base?
120×200 cm. A base is produced at exactly the same width and length as the mattress. On storage bases the body height is between 33 and 40 cm.
Should I buy 120×190 or 120×200?
120×200 is the common standard and bedding is easier to find for it. Choose 120×190 only if the internal size of your existing frame is 190 cm. The rule: a bed should be at least 15 cm longer than the person using it.
Is a three-quarter bed suitable for a teenager's room?
Yes — it is the most sensible in-between size for teenagers who have outgrown a 90. It takes up 30 cm less than a 150 and protects the space set aside for a desk.
