What Is Martindale? How Many Cycles Are Enough for Sofa Fabric?

Short answer: Martindale is a laboratory test measuring a fabric's resistance to abrasion (EN ISO 12947); it gives the number of cycles until two threads break. For home use, 25,000-30,000 cycles is more than enough: 15,000-25,000 for a normal home, 25,000-30,000 for homes with children and heavy use, and over 40,000 for heavy commercial use. When you are looking at sofas, the first technical word out of the seller's mouth is usually this: "This fabric's Martindale is such-and-such." Then a number goes flying past — 25 thousand, 40 thousand, 110 thousand — and most people nod without knowing what it measures. Yet Martindale is one of the most concrete pieces of data for predicting how many years a sofa will keep looking right in your home. What is Martindale, and how is it measured?

Martindale is a laboratory test measuring a fabric's resistance to abrasion. Its international standard is EN ISO 12947. In the test a round sample of the fabric is stretched and fixed into the machine, and a standard abrasive surface (usually a standard wool cloth) is pressed onto it. The sample is then rubbed along a figure-of-eight path that gradually rotates. That path matters: it wears the fabric not always in the same direction but from every direction — just as happens when you sit down and get up, lean on the arm, or slide across it.

The machine counts every cycle. The number of cycles until two threads break on the fabric's surface is its Martindale value. So "110,000 cycles" means the fabric showed its first structural failure after being rubbed 110 thousand times in the laboratory. The higher the number, the longer the fabric resists the wear of everyday use.

How many cycles are enough? What the numbers mean in practice

There is a rough scale accepted in the trade. For upholstery fabrics, the everyday meaning of the numbers is:

  • Under 10,000 cycles: decorative use. Cushion covers, curtains, accent furniture rarely sat on. No place on a daily seating group.
  • 10,000 - 15,000 cycles: light home use. Places used a few hours a week, such as a guest room or a bedroom armchair.
  • 15,000 - 25,000 cycles: normal home use. A two-person household's living room does fine on this range for many years.
  • 25,000 - 30,000 cycles: heavy home use. A home with children, hours in front of the television every evening, pets.
  • 30,000 - 40,000 cycles: the commercial threshold. A hotel lobby, an office waiting area, a café.
  • 40,000 cycles and over: heavy commercial use. Airports, restaurants, constantly changing users.

The conclusion is clear: for a home, 25-30 thousand cycles is already more than enough. Higher values are not a bad thing, but they do not read as "twice the number, twice the life". A 60-thousand-cycle fabric does not last twice as long as a 30-thousand one; past a certain threshold what decides a sofa's lifespan is not the fabric but the foam density, the frame and the quality of the stitching.

An example: a 110,000-cycle fabric

The upholstery fabric we use on the Arinna corner sofa has a Martindale value of 110,000 cycles. Put on the scale above, that is above even the heavy commercial class. In other words, in home use the fabric wearing through is not realistically going to happen; your reason for changing the sofa is more likely to be a change of taste than a hole in the fabric.

Values that high generally come from tightly woven fabrics with thick twisted yarn and a flat surface. Fabrics with a pile, a velvet texture or a loose weave do not give the same figure — that does not make them bad, they simply carry a different promise of use.

Why does the same fabric's value change from batch to batch?

This is where customers are most often misled. A Martindale value is not a fixed number engraved on the fabric but the test result of a sample taken from a particular production batch. Test the same fabric from the next batch and the number will not come out identical.

The reason is not deception but the nature of production:

  • Yarn twist: the tightness of the twist varies by fractions in every batch, and that affects surface resistance.
  • Weave density: the loom's tension setting can shift the number of weft and warp threads per centimetre by a few.
  • Dye and finishing baths: dyeing temperature, duration and finishing chemicals can harden or soften the fibre's surface.
  • The sample itself: even which part of the roll the test piece is cut from moves the result by a few thousand cycles.

In practice, on the fabrics we follow, this variation stays in the 3,000-5,000 cycle band. Against 110 thousand that is a deviation of about 3-5% — entirely normal fluctuation that does not change the fabric's class. If a seller tells you "this fabric comes out at exactly 110,000 in every batch", they are either reciting the figure from memory or do not know how the test is done. The right sentence is: this fabric is in the 110 thousand band, and it can move by a few thousand cycles depending on the batch.

A high Martindale does not mean "this fabric is perfect in every way". The test looks only at abrasion resistance. It does not measure:

  • Pilling: the formation of small balls of fluff on the surface is measured by a separate test. A fabric with a high Martindale can still pill.
  • Colour fastness: whether the fabric will fade in a sunlit room is determined by a light fastness test. In south-facing rooms with large windows that matters more than Martindale.
  • Staining and cleanability: is it cleaned with water-based or solvent-based products; has the fabric been given a stain-resistant treatment? These are stated on separate labels.
  • Stitching and assembly: however strong the fabric, a sofa whose seams open is still a problem.

Four questions to ask when choosing fabric

Once you know the Martindale in the showroom, these are the questions to ask:

  • What fibre is the fabric? Polyester blends resist abrasion; linen and cotton look more natural but wear faster.
  • Are there children or pets at home? If so, tightly woven fabrics with a dense texture that claws cannot catch cause fewer problems.
  • Will the sofa stand somewhere that gets sun? If so, ask for the light fastness value.

Three simple habits for a long life

Even the most hard-wearing fabric wears out early if it is badly treated. Three things extend its life noticeably: turn the cushions once a month so the wear does not gather in one place; avoid putting the sofa in front of a window in direct sun, and soften it with a curtain if you must; and take the dust off once a week with a soft-brush vacuum head — what really cuts the fibres is the fine dust that works its way into the weave.
