12-Seater Table Sizes: 340 cm or 400 cm?

Short answer: a 12-seater dining table is 340-360 × 100-110 cm if rectangular and 360 × 120 cm if oval. The tight minimum is 320 × 100 cm. The height is 75-78 cm. The round shape loses its practicality at 12 people: the diameter needed reaches 230 cm. In most homes a table for twelve is not a fixed table but an extending one that is 180-200 cm when closed and reaches 400-500 cm when opened.

The 60 cm per person rule applies here too: if 5 people sit along a long side you need 5 × 60 = 300 cm of net edge, and with legroom and corner allowance the table grows to 320-340 cm. Add one person at each end and you have 12. If you want to seat the same 12 people with the ends left empty, the table has to be 380 cm, so using the ends saves 40-60 cm of table length.

Why is a 12-seater round table difficult?

The circumference maths is unforgiving: 12 × 60 = 720 cm of circumference, and 720 ÷ 3.14 = 229 cm diameter. At the centre of a table 230 cm in diameter there is an area of about 110 cm that nobody can reach; the distance between you and the person opposite is more than two metres, and conversation at the table becomes hard. That is why a 12-seater round table only makes sense with a rotating serving tray and in large living rooms.

The practical solution is the oval shape: it seats the same crowd at 360 × 120 cm while keeping the soft lines of a round table. The full diameter-to-seats chart for round tables is in our article on round table sizes.

How many m² should the room be for a 12-seater table?

Allow 75 cm on each side for pulling the chair back, and 100 cm if people need to walk behind it. With a table for twelve these allowances quickly increase the total area:

Table sizeFloor area neededApprox. m²
320 × 100 cm470 × 250 cm11.8 m²
360 × 100 cm510 × 250 cm12.8 m²
400 × 110 cm550 × 260 cm14.3 m²
230 cm diameter (round)380 × 380 cm14.4 m²

↔ Scroll the table sideways to see all of it.

These figures are for the dining area only. If the living room where the table stands also has a seating group, the total room approaches 32-35 m². We covered how to divide the whole living room in how many square metres should a living room be.

Fixed 360 cm table or extending table?

This is the real decision to make with a table for twelve. A fixed 360 cm table sits in the middle of the living room 24 hours a day; for a family of four, two thirds of that table is empty for most of the year. An extending table covers the same crowd but shrinks to a 180-200 cm body in daily life.

The real sizes of the extending models at Selishome show at what point the need for 12 is met:

ModelClosed sizeOpen lengthCapacity when open
Reel Extending Dining Table200 × 100 cm360 cm12 people
Diamond Extending Dining Table200 × 100 cm350 / 400 cm12-14 people

Asia Extending Dining Table200 × 100 cm500 cm16 people
Royal Extending Dining Table180 / 200 × 100 cm500 cm16 people

The most striking row in the table is Petra: a small 140 × 100 cm body reaches 440 cm with its extension leaves. This is the only way to lay a big table in a small living room. Whether the extension leaf is stored inside the table or kept separately determines daily use; we explained the difference between the mechanisms in the extending dining table buying guide. The size options are written on the page of each model in the dining table category; for example the Royal Extending Dining Table is made in two different closed sizes.

Three hidden problems with an extending table

  • Leg position. When the table opens to 400 cm there may be no leg under the extension leaf; the knee of the person at the edge meets empty space rather than a leg, which is good. But on some models a leg falls right at the edge and a chair cannot be pulled in at that point. Check the leg spacing on the product page.
  • Surface and edge alignment. When the extension leaf is fitted, the top should look like a single piece. On tops with thick edge banding a thin line remains at the joint; on ceramic and porcelain tops this line is more visible. We compared the material differences in table top materials.
  • Where will it go when open? When a 400 cm table is opened, its position in the room changes; usually one end comes up against a wall or a display cabinet. Before buying, mark the direction in which the table will open on the floor with tape.

The matter of 12 chairs

Twelve chairs are the least discussed burden of a table for twelve. Chairs with armrests raise the 60 cm per person to 68-70 cm; on a 360 cm table 4 people fit along a long side instead of 5, and the table suddenly becomes a 10-seater. If you are aiming for twelve people, choose armless chairs with a slim frame.

Seat height should be 45-47 cm and table height 75-78 cm; the 30 cm difference between them determines the legroom. For details see our article on how to choose dining room chairs. For smaller sizes, our articles on 10-seater table sizes and 8-seater table sizes do the same calculation for their own capacities.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the size of a 12-seater table in cm?

340-360 × 100-110 cm for rectangular, 360 × 120 cm for oval. The tight minimum is 320 × 100 cm. The height is 75-78 cm in every shape.

How many people does a 400 cm table seat?

A 400 × 100 cm table seats 14 people, 6 on each long side and 1 at each end. If the ends are not used, 12 people sit very comfortably.

How many people does a 500 cm table seat?

8 people fit along each long side; with the ends that makes 16-18 people. Tables of this length are the fully open state of extending models and fold down to 180-200 cm in daily use.

What size should a 12-seater round table be?

About 230 cm in diameter. You need 12 × 60 = 720 cm of circumference, which corresponds to a 229 cm diameter. Because this leaves a 110 cm area in the centre that cannot be reached, an oval or rectangular shape is more practical for 12 people.

How many square metres should the room be for a 12-seater table?

13-14 m² for the dining area alone. Around a 360 × 100 cm table, with chairs and walkway allowance, you need 510 × 250 cm of clear floor. If the room also has a seating group, the total approaches 32 m².

Should a 12-seater table be fixed or extending?

Extending, if 12 people do not sit down every evening. A table that is 200 × 100 cm when closed and opens to 400 cm handles a big gathering without crowding the living room in daily life.

How many chairs are used at a 12-seater table?

12 with armless chairs, 10 with armchairs. Armrests add 8-10 cm per person and turn a 360 cm table into a 10-seater.
