How High Should a TV Be? Unit Dimensions 2026
Short answer: one criterion decides the height of a television: when you are seated, your eyes should be level with the centre of the screen. Because eye level on a sofa is 100-110 cm from the floor, the centre of the screen should sit between 95 and 105 cm. As the screen gets bigger the body gets taller, so the unit gets lower: 65-70 cm for 43 inches, 55-60 cm for 55 inches, 45-55 cm for 65 inches, 40-45 cm for 75 inches. The standard TV unit is 210-220 cm wide, 45-50 cm deep and 52-62 cm high.
How high should a TV be? A table by screen size
The real information in the table is the middle column: the height of the screen centre stays the same at every size; what changes is the unit. Put a 75-inch screen on the same unit instead of a 43-inch and the centre of the screen shifts about 20 cm upwards, forcing your neck to look up.

The unit heights in the table include the 4-6 cm allowance for a screen on its own stand. If the screen is to be wall-mounted, the same calculation applies to the bracket line.
A three-step calculation for your own room
- Sit where you always sit and measure from the floor to your eyes; on a sofa with a 43-48 cm seat the result comes out at 100-115 cm.
- Take half the screen height; on a 55-inch that is about 34 cm.
- Subtract half the screen height and a 5 cm stand allowance from your eye level. The figure left is the unit height.

How many cm is an inch? TV screen size table
On a television, the inch measurement is the screen's diagonal — not its width or height. 1 inch = 2.54 cm. On 16:9 screens the real width and height come out of the diagonal as follows. These are the panel sizes without the frame; depending on the brand, the body is 1-3 cm larger in each direction.

If you have a measurement in centimetres, work the other way. If you measured the diagonal, divide by 2.54: a 96 cm diagonal ≈ 38 inches, a 140 cm diagonal ≈ 55 inches. If you measured only the screen's width, divide by 2.2: 96 cm wide ≈ 43 inches, 160 cm wide ≈ 72-75 inches. Most measuring errors come from here — people measure the width and think it is the inch size.
How many inches will fit my room? Viewing distance
The criterion is the ratio of the sofa-to-screen distance to the diagonal. On 4K screens the pixels are invisible so you can sit closer; in practice 1.8-2 times the diagonal gives the most balanced result.

Four models from four different ranges — all within 209-220 cm wide, 45-50 cm deep and 52-62 cm high. That is the standard in the trade; 220 cm is the most popular size.
- Width. If the unit is narrower than the screen, the television looks as though it is floating. The screen's width is roughly inches × 2.2 = centimetres; the unit should leave 15-20 cm on each side of it. Ask for at least 240 cm of clear wall, because the skirting and the radiator eat into it.
- Depth 45-50 cm. This range leaves room for cables at the back and lets the modem and satellite receiver fit inside a closed compartment. Under 35 cm the doors will not close.
- Height 52-62 cm. The right range for 43-55 inch screens; at 65 inches and over, mounting the screen on the wall slightly lower gives a more comfortable angle than putting it on top of such a block.

Socket height and cable management
- If it will stand on the unit, the socket can stay 20-30 cm from the floor; the cable disappears behind the unit.
- If it will be wall-mounted, have the socket put at 100-110 cm, level with the back of the screen. The cable is then invisible and does not hang down.
- The socket's horizontal position. A socket directly behind the screen pushes the body 5-6 cm off the wall. Shifting it 20-30 cm to one side of the screen ends that problem.
- A closed wooden door blocks the signal. Keep remote-controlled devices on an open shelf, or choose a glazed door.
Wall-mounting a TV: how high does the bracket go?
The height at which the bracket is screwed to the wall and the height of the screen's centre are not the same thing. On most screens the VESA holes are in the middle of the body or a few centimetres above it. The right order is:
- Decide your target screen centre (95-105 cm).
- Stand the screen upright and measure the height of the VESA holes from its bottom edge.
- Subtract half the screen height from your target centre, then add the VESA offset you measured. The result is the bracket line on the wall.
The practical result for a 65-inch screen: the bottom edge of the screen ends up about 55-65 cm from the floor and the bracket line around 95-110 cm.
- The VESA size is the spacing in millimetres of the four screw holes on the back of the screen (200×200, 400×400 and so on). The bracket must match it; it is stated in the manual.
- Wall type: a heavy screen cannot be hung straight onto plasterboard; a supporting stud is needed behind it.
- Plan the cable route in advance; cutting a channel afterwards damages the wall.
Which wall? Reflections and windows
A screen at the right height on the wrong wall is still tiring. Do not put the television directly opposite a window: during the day there will be reflections and the picture looks washed out. A wall at right angles to the window is best, with the light coming from the side. Having a window directly behind the screen also tires the eyes; and do not hang a mirror opposite the screen either.

Lower block, upper block and shelves: modular unit arrangements
- Lower block: carries the screen and hides the equipment and cables; this is the piece that sets the viewing angle.
- Upper block: makes use of the empty wall above the screen and gives closed storage. The Rams unit upper block completes the same range.
- Shelves and bookcases: gain vertical space at the sides and make the unit look wider.
If you are wall-mounting the screen there is no need for an upper block; on walls under 3 metres an upper block looks crowded anyway.

So that the screen centre is 95-105 cm from the floor. Because a 65-inch body is about 81 cm tall, the bottom edge of the screen sits 55-65 cm from the floor and the bracket around 95-110 cm. If you are putting it on a unit, the unit should be 45-55 cm high.
How high should a TV unit be?
45-65 cm in most rooms. Selishome models' lower blocks are in the 52-62 cm range. The smaller the screen the higher the unit; the larger the screen the lower.
How wide should a TV unit be for a 65-inch screen?
At least 200 cm, and 220 cm for it to look right. A 65-inch screen is 144 cm wide; on a 220 cm unit that leaves 38 cm on each side and the proportions look balanced.
How wide should a TV unit be for a 75-inch screen?
At least 220 cm, ideally 240-260 cm. A 75-inch is 166 cm wide, so on a 220 cm unit only 27 cm is left on each side; it fits, but looks cramped.
How many cm is a 45-inch TV?
Its diagonal is 114 cm, the screen width about 100 cm and the height 56 cm. With the frame, the body is 1-3 cm larger in each direction.
How high should the TV socket be?
20-30 cm is enough if the screen will stand on a unit. If it will be wall-mounted, have the socket placed at 100-110 cm, level with the back of the screen.
How deep should a TV unit be?
45-50 cm. This range leaves room for cables at the back and lets devices such as the modem and receiver fit inside a closed compartment. Under 35 cm the door hits the cables.
Is it right to mount the TV above a fireplace?
It looks tidy but is not ergonomic. Above a fireplace, the screen centre rises to 130-150 cm, which means looking up constantly and causes neck and eye strain over a long viewing session.
