Corner Sofa or Sofa Set? A Guide to Deciding by Your Living Room

Short answer: if your living room gathers around the television, needs to seat more people in the same square metres, and has a corner going to waste, a corner sofa is the better answer. If you want a room suited to entertaining, face-to-face conversation and changing the layout from time to time, a classic sofa set (three-seater + two-seater + armchair) is more flexible. A corner sofa saves space but locks the room into one arrangement; a classic set takes more room but can be rearranged with every move.

Which living room suits a corner sofa?

The real gain of a corner sofa is that it turns the dead area in the corner of a wall into seating. It comes into its own when:

• The television is the main focus. Everyone faces the same way and nobody has to turn their neck.
• There are children at home. The wide, deep seat is used constantly for playing and lying down.
• The room is long and narrow. The L form divides a long room into seating and dining zones.
• Space per person is limited. With fewer armrests, the same length gives more seats.

Which living room suits a classic sofa set?

• If you entertain often. A face-to-face arrangement makes conversation easier; nobody sits side by side turning their neck.
• If you like changing the layout. You can move the armchair to a window and make a reading corner, or take the two-seater to another room.

• If you might move. A classic set can be adapted to a new living room; a corner set may not fit the new room's corner.

The size decision: which one fits your room?

Before deciding, write down three measurements: the clear length of the wall the sofa will go against, the distance to the opposite wall, and the route into the room.

• For a corner sofa: keep the wing lengths at least 40 cm shorter than the wall. Check whether there is a socket, radiator or door swing in the corner where the corner module sits.
• For a classic set: remember that a three-seater can be anywhere from 220 to 265 cm wide; you need separate wall allowance for the two-seater and armchair.
• For both: leave 40-45 cm between the sofa and the coffee table.

Function: beds, relax modules and reclining headrests

The decision between the two is often settled by functions:

• Reclining headrest models: you set the neck support to suit yourself; it makes a difference on long film nights.
• Relax modules with a footrest: they move to lie-down use, but need extra room in front when open.
