What Makes Furniture Prices Vary? Cheap vs. Good Value
Short answer: the difference in price between two pieces of furniture that look the same comes from five things — material (solid timber, MDF or chipboard), the quality of the filling and mechanisms, workmanship, the brand's marketing costs and how many middlemen the product has passed through. Only the first three extend the life of the product. So cheap furniture and good-value furniture are not the same thing: in one, the saving has come out of the product; in the other, out of the chain in between.

This is the distinction that saves the most money when buying furniture.
- Cheap furniture: the price has been brought down by taking things out of the product. On a sofa, a chipboard frame and low-density foam; in a wardrobe, a thin body panel and weak hinges; on a table, foil instead of veneer. In the first year you notice nothing; by the third the seat collapses, the door drops and the edge banding lifts.
- Good-value furniture: the price has been cut from the chain, not the product. The same solid frame, the same foam, the same fabric; but because the warehouse-wholesaler-dealer-showroom sequence is shorter, less cost is loaded onto the label.

The 5 items that set the price
1. Material
In panel furniture (wardrobes, bedroom sets, TV units) the body material and its thickness are the backbone of the price. Solid timber is the most expensive tier, good-quality MDF the middle, chipboard the cheapest. On a sofa, whether the frame is solid hornbeam/beech or particle board goes straight into both the price and the lifespan.
2. Filling and mechanisms
On a sofa, cost rises as foam density rises; a density of 28-35 in the seat foam is long-lived. An extending table mechanism, soft-close hinges, full-extension drawer runners, the pistons of a lifting storage base — each adds to the price, and all of them are felt in use.
3. Fabric
On the same sofa model, the choice of fabric changes the price considerably. Boucle, chenille, linen-look weaves and stain-resistant coated fabrics belong to different price groups. The "group 1 / group 2" distinction on the swatch card means exactly this.
4. Workmanship and detail
Buttoned stitching, curved arms, routed door detail, carved wood, the quality of the edge banding — all of it is human labour and goes into the price. A plain-lined product being cheap does not mean it is poor quality; it simply contains less labour.
5. The length of the chain
After it leaves the production line, no quality is added to a product — only cost: an intermediate warehouse, the wholesaler's margin, the regional dealer, the showroom, rent, sales commission, the advertising budget. This is the most common reason the same product is priced very differently in two places.
Where is the cheapest furniture bought?
The only sound way to genuinely bring the price down is to shorten the chain in between. By contrast, steer clear of these three kinds of "bargain":
- Permanent discounts presented as closing-down or clearance sales. If the label price is raised and then a discount written on it, the discount means nothing.
- Products with no dimensions given. If the size is hidden, it is usually smaller than you expect.
- Listings with no material information. "First-class materials" is not information; the frame type, panel thickness and foam density are.
Ways to buy better furniture on the same budget

- Invest in the surfaces you touch. If the budget is tight, put the money where your hands go every day: the sofa seat, the mattress, the table top. Decorative extras can be added later.

- Buy out of season. Production is busiest in spring and the wedding season, and lead times stretch. In the winter months both choice and timing work in your favour.

Is good-value furniture poor quality?
No. If the price has been cut from the chain rather than the product, the quality is the same. To tell the difference, ask about the frame type, panel thickness and foam density; if those three are the same, nothing has been lost in the cheaper product.
When do furniture prices fall?
In periods when demand drops, manufacturers work more flexibly to fill their capacity. Shopping outside the wedding and spring seasons is an advantage for both price and delivery time.
Does paying in full change the price?
On instalment sales the cost of credit is reflected in the price. When asking about payment options, ask for the cash and instalment totals separately and see the difference.
How much does changing the dimensions affect the price?
A special size means going outside the standard pattern; the amount of material and the labour change. The difference varies by model, but the real effect is usually felt in the production time. Ask for both the amount and the timing in writing before ordering.
Does second-hand furniture make sense?
In panel furniture, screw holes widen during dismantling and reassembly and the body never returns to its original strength. On a sofa, the foam and hygiene are a problem. If the budget is tight, setting up a new arrangement with fewer pieces usually gives a better result than buying second-hand.
