Work out your own TV in 3 steps
- 1. Measure the diagonal. Run the tape from the bottom left corner to the top right; measure the glass, not the bezel. Divide the centimetres you get by 2.54 — that is the inch figure.
- 2. Find the width. Multiply the diagonal by 0.87: 140 × 0.87 = 122 cm. For the height, multiply by 0.49.
- 3. Add 20-30 cm for the unit. Leave 10-15 cm clear on each side; that also gives you room if you add a soundbar later.
The most common mistake: measuring the width of the screen and taking it for the inch figure. If all you have is the width, divide by 2.2: a width of 122 cm ≈ 55 inches.
Which size suits which room? Viewing distance
The measure that counts is the distance between where you sit and the screen; on a 4K screen, 1.8 to 2 times the diagonal gives a balanced result. Take the depth of the unit into account too: if there are 3.5 m from the wall to the sofa, your real distance to a screen standing on a 45 cm deep unit is 3 metres.
