How to Choose a Sofa Bed: Pull-Out Sofa and Mechanism Guide

Short answer: The first thing to look at when choosing a sofa bed is not the model but how often you will use it. If you host guests a few times a year, a modular corner sofa whose backrests recline is enough. If it will be used a few nights a month, a sofa that opens forward with a mechanism inside its body makes sense. If it will be used as a bed every night, buy a real bed with a base rather than a sofa; no pull-out sofa can replace a bed in terms of foam thickness. When deciding, note down three numbers: the sofa's closed size, its open (bed) size and the free space left in the direction it opens.

What is a sofa bed, and is it different from a pull-out sofa?

In everyday language the two describe the same thing: a sofa that serves for sitting by day and sleeping at night. In the trade there is a small distinction. A pull-out sofa is generally a single-body piece, two or three seats, that opens forward. A sofa bed can be part of a living room suite; a three-seater opens out, one module of a corner suite turns into a bed, or all the backrests are reclined to obtain an uninterrupted flat surface.

The difference becomes concrete at the point of purchase in this question: how much does the living room change when the sofa turns into a bed? With a forward-opening model you have to move the coffee table aside; with a reclining-backrest model the sofa stays where it is and only the backrest tips back.

Mechanism types: three setups

Three-seater sofa opened forward with the mechanism inside its body and turned into a bed.
In the forward-opening setup the mechanism is inside the body; no extra piece is attached.

1. Forward-opening (mechanism inside the body)

The seat block slides forward, the backrest comes down and a flat sleeping surface forms. Its advantage is that the surface is uninterrupted. The Carius three-seater sofa works in this setup: the mechanism is inside the body, so you do not need to attach a separate piece or pull the sofa away from the wall. This type is the right choice for homes where a guest will really sleep.

2. Reclining backrest (stepped backrest)

The backrest of each module is tipped back one by one and the seat depth grows to bed depth. This is the most functional side of the Kays corner sofa suite; with a few movements the corner sofa switches to an uninterrupted bed layout. Because the mechanism is simple, the chance of failure is low, but the surface obtained is not as flat as a real bed; a slight line is felt at the module joints.

3. Joined modules (functional corner suite)

In functional corner suites a single module is already bed-sized. In the Tesla corner sofa the bed module alone is 200 × 100 cm; the headrests open in steps and the footrests extend with a button on the armrest. The "bed" here is a single, but it is the most comfortable solution for daily naps and film sessions.

How many people does the bed sleep when open?

This is the question most often skipped before purchase. The rough rule is: the width of the bed equals the seat width of the sofa, and its length equals the sofa depth plus the section that opens out.

  • Three-seater sofa (240 cm body): after subtracting the armrests, a bed width of roughly 190-200 cm remains, so two people fit comfortably.
  • Two-seater sofa (180 cm body): roughly 130-140 cm, a wide single or a narrow double.
  • Corner module setup: as long as the long arm. When two modules of 120 + 120 cm are joined, a 240 cm surface results.

These values change with armrest thickness; ask for the open size as a figure before ordering. For all the sofa sizes (three-seater 240, two-seater 180, seat height 42-48 cm), see our article on sofa sizes.

Opening clearance: how much space should be left in front of the sofa?

Bird's-eye view of a modular corner sofa with its backrests reclined and turned into a bed layout.
In the reclining-backrest setup the sofa does not move; only the backrests tip back.

With forward-opening models the sofa grows 60-90 cm beyond its closed depth. To this you add the 60 cm walkway needed to get out of the bed. So allow for a strip of 2.2-2.6 metres in total from the wall.

If your coffee table is fixed and heavy, you will be wrestling with it every night with this setup. The solution is to use a nest of tables or a side table that can easily be moved aside, instead of one big coffee table. When working out the living room dimensions you also need to take the door, lift and corridor allowances into account; we listed the steps in how to measure furniture.

What should you look at if it will be used every night?

  • Frame. In a body that is opened and closed constantly, the strength of the frame is decisive. A hornbeam wood frame lets the seat keep its shape for many years.
  • Seat foam. In sofa beds the foam carries both the sitting and the sleeping load. Models with soft foam are comfortable for sitting but sag for sleeping; a medium-firm seat is more balanced.
  • Fabric durability. Friction from bedding stretches the fabric when opening and closing. The Martindale value shows a fabric's rub resistance; we explained what it means in our Martindale guide.
  • Cleanability. A sofa used at night sees more stains. In fabric choice, removable covers and stain-resistant textures stand out; for practical methods see how to clean a fabric sofa.
  • Mechanism noise. Open and close the sofa twice in the shop. Metal parts catching or squeaking is a sign of trouble from day one.

6 checks before ordering

  • Write down the closed width, depth and height of the sofa.
  • Ask separately for the open (bed) size of the sofa; the catalogue often gives only the closed size.
  • Establish the direction of opening: does it open forward, or does the backrest recline?
  • Measure the remaining walkway in the open position in centimetres; do not decide by eye.
  • For a corner suite, write in the order note which side the corner will be on; changing the direction later is not possible on every model.
  • Check the delivery size: a single-body 240 cm sofa will not fit in most lifts, while a modular setup will go up narrow stairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you sleep on a sofa bed every day?

Technically yes, but for comfort it cannot replace a bed. A sofa bed is designed not for 8 hours of sleep a day but for occasional and guest use. If you are planning a space to be slept in every day, a bed frame with a base is a better investment.

Can a pull-out sofa sleep two people?

On three-seater models the opened surface can reach 190-200 cm in width, so two people sleep comfortably. On a two-seater body the width stays in the 130-140 cm band, which is narrow for two people.

Is there storage inside a sofa bed?

It varies by model. In some setups lifting the seat reveals a storage space for bedding, while in some functional suites the mechanism fills this void. It is a detail to ask about before ordering.

Does a corner sofa become a bed when the backrest is reclined?

On models with a stepped backrest mechanism, yes. Because the surface obtained is made of joined modules, it is not as smooth as a flat bed; laying a thin mattress topper over it largely closes this difference.

How long does a sofa bed mechanism last?

What decides it is frequency of use and the frame. A mechanism opened once a week gives no trouble for years; in a sofa opened and closed daily, the metal parts and foam tire faster. When buying, ask whether the warranty covers the mechanism.

Is a sofa bed suitable for a small living room?

It is, and it is in fact the most practical solution for small homes without a guest room. The only condition is that there is a walkway in front of the sofa when it is open. We gathered the layout rules for a small living room in how to furnish a small living room.
